Labrador
is accessible by road. A partially paved, largely gravel road extends
from Baie Comeau, Quebec into western Labrador, then crosses into
Goose Bay. Motorists planning to drive this route should be prepared
for minimal services along the way. It is roughly a 32-hour NON-STOP
drive from Montreal. Quebec, to Goose Bay.
A
new gravel road also extends from Red Bay to Cartwright along the
eastern Labrador coast. Access to this road is via ferry from the
island of Newfoundland. An additional ferry ride will be required
to travel between Cartwright and Goose Bay. This is also a lengthy
route, with ferry connections required from North Sydney, Nova Scotia
to the island of Newfoundland, a 90-mile sailing across the Gulf of
St. Lawrence, then a scenic drive along the west coast of the island
and into the Great Northern Peninsula to reach the St. Barbe ferry
for a one hour sail across the Strait of Belle Isle to Blanc Sablon,
Quebec.
Commercial
air travel is provided daily to a modern airport at Goose Bay. The
area is currently served by local carriers Air Labrador and InterProvincial
Airlines from points within the province, as well as Air Canada. Flight
schedules usually change in spring to accommodate increased summer
traffic, Other airlines may also include Goose Bay in their routings,
